Overview

Engineering education is facing a paradigm change for coping with Industry needs, and crises (Russian war against Ukraine, COVID-19, and climate change). To keep up with technological changes in the factories and attract students, universities worldwide are hurriedly adapting their industrial engineering curricula by proposing new single courses or, sometimes, even entire degree programs connected to Industry 4.0. On the other side, companies are proposing professional courses related to Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing. Higher education institutions are under enormous pressure to educate the profiles of technicians and engineers required by the labor market. It is necessary to develop new forms, structures, and methods for modern and future-oriented education and training around Industry 4.0 competencies. Industry 5.0 complements and extends Industry 4.0, emphasizing aspects that will be deciding factors, not just economic or technological, for the place of industry in the future society. These factors have also environmental, social, and fundamental rights dimensions. Industry 5.0 is the result of a forward-looking exercise to help frame how European industry and emerging societal trends and needs can co-exist. The track feeds into the wider debate on industrial transformation. The specialists of the future must be qualified in new technologies and prepared for implementation in the companies. This track invites scientists as well as practitioners to develop innovative concepts and share their experiences from best practices and thus contribute towards Engineering Education.
